About generic drugs
Generic drugs are identical, or bio equivalent to the brand name drug in dosage form, safety, the strength of the drug, the route of administration, quality, performance characteristics and the intended use.
Although generic drugs are chemically identical to the equivalent brand name drugs, generic drugs are typically sold at a substantially lower price than the brand name drug.
Why generic drugs are cheaper
When a drug manufacturer develops a new drug, it is developed under patent protection, this protects the investment in the development of the drug by giving the manufacturer the sole right to sell the drug while the patent is in effect.
When the patent expires, other drug manufacturers can apply to the FDA to sell generic versions of the drug. Manufacturers of generic drugs do not repeat the costly development and clinical research on ingredients or dosage forms, this has already been performed by the original drug manufacturer, and the drug has already been approved for safety and effectiveness.
Generic drug manufacturers are able to market generic drugs without the large expense of research and development. This allows generic drug manufacturers to offer generic drugs at a much lower price.
Generic drugs are not inferior in any way to the brand drug.
Some online pharmacies sell both the generic and brand versions of a drug, although some generic pharmacies only sell generic drugs. When you click through to an online pharmacy from our price comparison tables selling both generic and brand versions, you may find both the generic and brand version listed on the same page.
